Ulster County Construction & Development Firm Receives 2 National Awards from U.S. Department of Energy

October 16, 2023

AHC, the construction management and development company based in Gardiner, NY, was honored with two, best in the nation Grand Awards for their high-performance building in New Paltz, Zero Place. The awards were given at a ceremony on Wednesday, October 11 at the Energy & Environmental Building Alliance (EEBA) High Performance Home Building Summit in Salt Lake City, UT.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Housing Innovation Awards recognize leading builders from across the country who are constructing Zero Energy Ready Homes (ZERH), the federal government’s highest certification program for home performance. At the ceremony, winners were selected from an esteemed panel of judges, brought together for their expertise in the high-performance housing industry.

AHC completed construction on Zero Place in New Paltz, NY in 2022. Zero Place is a LEED Platinum certified, net-zero energy building comprising 48 residential units and 8,400 square feet of prime retail space. Energy efficient strategies employed in the building’s construction include insulated concrete forms, a geothermal heating and cooling system, a 245-kW onsite solar array, electric car charging stations, high performance windows, superior insulation, high efficiency HVAC/ventilators, and LED lighting and data controls. Employing these innovative technologies and systems results in overall net zero energy bills for residents, long-term sustainability, and exceptional resiliency. The Zero Place Project was a beneficiary of NYSERDA’s support through the Low-rise Residential New Construction Program, Round 1 of the Buildings of Excellence Competition, NY-Sun, NYSERDA’s iteration of the NYS Clean Heat Program, and a version of the EV charging program.

Of the pool of winners, AHC was awarded two of the six possible Grand Awards: “Blazing the Trail” for Zero Place’s innovative use of technologies, and “The Total Package” for highest overall scoring across all categories.
